As the nation commemorates Juneteenth and reflects on the ongoing pursuit of freedom, economic equity, and opportunity, Dr. Jamal Harrison Bryant, Senior Pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, is taking action to create a pathway toward lasting economic empowerment in Black communities.

On Sunday, June 21, during Juneteenth weekend, Pastor Bryant will lead a groundbreaking and blessing ceremony for New Birth Village, a transformative residential housing development that represents the first major initiative under the church’s newly launched Black Ground Initiative.

The project reflects Bryant’s commitment to moving beyond conversations about economic empowerment and creating tangible opportunities for ownership, investment, and generational wealth.

New Birth Village has been years in the making and will feature 390 residential homes developed and constructed by an all-Black team of construction professionals, developers, planners, and contractors. The initiative has already generated significant interest, with more than 3,000 people joining the waiting list before construction has officially begun, highlighting the tremendous need for affordable, quality housing and accessible homeownership opportunities.

For Pastor Bryant, New Birth Village is about more than building homes, it is about building a foundation for economic independence.

“We don’t want to just teach financial literacy, we want to demonstrate what ownership looks like,” Bryant shared. “Real estate continues to be one of the most powerful pathways to building generational wealth, and this project is designed to help create that opportunity.”

The groundbreaking marks the launch of the Affordable Housing pillar of the Black Ground Initiative, a comprehensive movement created to establish economic infrastructure and empower communities through ownership, education, and access.

Bryant explained that Black Ground was developed with a vision to create measurable change through five foundational areas, affordable housing, financial literacy, education, food security, and voting rights and civic engagement. Each pillar is designed to address critical needs facing Black communities while creating opportunities for long term growth and sustainability.

While New Birth Village serves as the first initiative under the Affordable Housing pillar, Bryant says additional programs connected to the remaining areas will roll out throughout 2026. The goal is to create a holistic approach that equips individuals and families with the resources needed to thrive.

“This is not just an event, this is a movement,” Bryant said. “We are committed to creating systems that provide ownership, opportunity, and prosperity for generations to come.”

The vision behind Black Ground comes amid a larger national conversation about economic justice and community investment. Bryant’s previous advocacy efforts, including his Target Fast campaign, brought attention to the importance of economic accountability and supporting Black businesses. However, he says Black Ground represents a shift from advocacy alone toward building sustainable solutions.

“We have to build what we want to see,” Bryant explained. “Economic justice requires more than awareness. It requires ownership, development, and investment in our own communities.”

The timing of the New Birth Village groundbreaking during Juneteenth weekend carries special significance. For Bryant, the celebration of emancipation must also include conversations about economic freedom and the ability for families to create lasting wealth.

“Freedom is incomplete without economic opportunity,” Bryant said. “Our goal is to help families establish stability, build wealth, and create a legacy that can be passed down for generations.”

The groundbreaking and blessing ceremony will bring together New Birth leadership, community leaders, elected officials, development partners, clergy, and residents to celebrate the beginning of a project that aims to serve as a model for community driven economic empowerment.

As construction begins, New Birth Village stands as more than a residential development. It represents a bold vision for the future, one centered on ownership, opportunity, and the belief that communities can build the resources needed to shape their own economic destiny.
