Riding in the 1970’s Cadillac from ‘Fight Night’ reminded me of the few memories I had with my Dad, sitting on the hump in between him and my Mom in the early 70’s. In celebration of the release of Fight Night, West Coast customs was tapped to create a replica of the 1966 Cadillac Calais. The bronzed Calais was used as a promotional item to create buzz around the series.

I’m sure I’m not alone in connecting 70’s with cool cars and fly clothes. Referred to as one of the coolest decades known, the 70s embodied the beauty of self-actualization for the Black community. Will Packer teamed up with Kevin Hart and Peacock for an 1970’s immersion with Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist. Focused on events surrounding Muhammad Ali’s comeback fight against a hopeful white contender in Jerry Quarry, the who’s who of an Atlanta’s burgeoning Black Mecca were set to champion their hero. The fight and the unfortunate events that took place at a fight after party are a vital part of Atlanta’s unique history.

The series speaks to the first signs of Atlanta becoming the cultural Mecca reflected by its leadership in 2024. To add context to the story, Peacock hosted an Atlanta takeover with eight local historically relevant black-owned businesses that contributed to the rich economic development of the city. Paschal’s, one of the longest standing soul food restaurants in the city with historical ties to the civil rights movement joined the efforts by selling sweet teas for .50 and fried chicken sandwiches for $2. The Cleremont Hotel is featured throughout the series and participated with Black-owned whiskey brands and coke for $4 and Tequila & Ginger for $4. Tu La 2 Nail Samonf offered manicures for $20, Versus Atl offered discounted socks, shorts and hats, Brooklyn Tea Atl offered .50 cent teas and Sublime doughnuts offered doughnuts for .25 cents a piece. The Atlanta takeover was a great opportunity to reminisce on life in the 70’s and the beginning stages of Atlanta’s rise to Black excellence. Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist is currently streaming on Peacock.
