Sue Johnson, Executive Director of NIA Cultural Center, Inspires Community with Star-Studded Juneteenth Gospel Celebration
This Juneteenth, Sue Johnson, Executive Director of the NIA Cultural Center, continues to shine a national spotlight on Galveston, Texas with the 5th Annual Emancipation Gospel Celebration Concert.

On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the historic 1894 Grand Opera House will transform from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM into a vibrant celebration of freedom, faith, and the enduring influence of Black culture, featuring a truly unforgettable evening of gospel music.
Under Sue Johnson’s visionary guidance, the NIA Cultural Center has grown into a cornerstone of African American heritage in Galveston.
Through music, art, education, and community programming, the Center continues to preserve and promote Black history while providing experiences that inspire, empower, and bring communities together.
Their annual Juneteenth celebration embodies this mission, blending world-class performances with a meaningful homage to cultural pride and community achievement.
The 2026 concert promises a star-studded gospel lineup that will leave audiences inspired. Four-time GRAMMY® winner Karen Clark Sheard, iconic member of the Clark Sisters, headlines the event with her extraordinary multi-octave voice that has influenced artists across genres.
Award-winning gospel artist Byron Cage, celebrated as the “Prince of Praise,” will perform his signature contemporary worship songs that have become staples in churches nationwide.
The evening will open with The Brown Four, a talented sibling group from Memphis, Tennessee, whose love of music began at home, in church, and on local playgrounds.
Beyond the performances, the event will recognize community leaders with the “Champions of Freedom Award,” honoring those whose contributions continue to uplift Galveston and the surrounding region. Sue Johnson shared, “Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our history, honor our culture, and celebrate freedom. Bringing these incredible gospel artists together allows us to recognize those who dedicate themselves to empowerment and positive change in our community.”

Alex Thomas, spokesperson for the NIA Cultural Center, added, “Music has the power to unite and inspire, and this event captures that perfectly. Thanks to Sue Johnson’s leadership, Galveston continues to be a hub for celebrating heritage and creating unforgettable experiences for generations to come.”
