We’ve heard tales of women having children in the double digits, but rarely in the modern area, or for Black families of today. That is why Doubling Down With the Derricos was so fascinating for its millions of viewers.

It was fun to watch the children interact, and Deon and Karen Derrico navigate life with a big family. But the elephant in the room, or on the screen, was how much it seemed Karen was shrinking from season to season.

From the moment Karen and Deon met in the club on that fateful day, they were inseparable. In an interview with Blavity, the couple stated they agreed on one thing from the beginning: having a big family. No one could have predicted that big would equate to being a family of 16.

As their family continued to grow, obviously, priorities had to shift. Deon worked in real estate to provide for the family, while Karen focused on caring for the children. With 14 kids, the cost of living and daily expenses were astronomical. In one episode, the former couple revealed their monthly grocery bill was between $2,500 and $3,500.

To offset other costs like entertainment, a lot of activities were done at home, and the family found free entertainment, or things at little to no cost for their large family. They focused on grooming at home, with Deon providing haircuts and Karen doing the girls’ hair. For Halloween, costumes were made at home. It was reported that Deon and Karen Derrico were reportedly paid between $25,000 and upwards of $50,000 per episode, earning about $6 million by the show’s end.

Still, the Derrico’s were not opposed to their family continuing to expand. Throughout the series’ four-season run, Karen suffered multiple miscarriages. They battled criticism from family members, namely Deon’s mother Gigi, and viewers, who felt 14 kids were more than enough.

At times, it seemed Karen could barely stay above water. She was grieving the children she lost while still caring for the 14 she had, with minimal help. She also didn’t seemingly have an outlet outside of being a wife and mother. Her life revolved around her children. The family’s friend, a younger male, who helped with the kids, was a friend of Deon’s. Gigi was Deon’s mother, not hers.

There were multiple episodes in which Karen seemed overwhelmed, and even checked out. She sought help from her husband and Gigi, who disregarded her feelings. Karen often spoke in confessionals about how she felt immense pressure, judged by Gigi, not prioritized over Gigi. in fact, Karen admitted she felt her husband weaponized her mother-in-law against her during many disagreements, leading her to feel ganged up on.

More so, Karen felt disconnected from her own family who lived down south. The family contemplated relocating to South Carolina to be closer to her family, which Deon, and of course Gigi, opposed.

“He’s in real estate, so, of course, it was the prime real estate. I’m thinking we can get to Myrtle Beach and be near the beach. In the event of anything happening, we can always sell and flip and get close to that value. There’s land, and we can have our own Derrico compound,” she told Blavity. “I grew up in the country. That’s my family there, and I wanted to be closer to my family so that they could get to know my mom and we had two big deaths in my family, my grandmother and my uncle, and that was a lot to endure being so far away. For me, I need them [the kids] to use those words, as far as cousins…”

Karen argued that not only would it give their children the chance to bond with her maternal side of the family, but the cost of living and quality of life for such a huge family was more affordable. She held out hope on a promise from Deon that one day, he’d consider the move. It never came.

It was clear that by the show's final season, their marriage was strained. Deon seemed checked out, and debuted a bold new look with his hair dyed blond. Karen opened up about trying to focus more on herself versus her family. Their divorce was kept under wraps until it was finalized, and made public. Deon was ordered to pay a miniscule amount of child support for their 13 minor children, less than $2k a month.

In an Instagram video released days after their split was announced, Karen thanked supporters for their support, asked for prayers, and said that she was focusing on staying busy with paid speaking engagements and motherhood. Deon largely remained silent.

But no one was expecting what was to come next. In June 2026, TMZ revealed that Karen was arrested for charges of violating a temporary restraining order, harassment, aggravated stalking and preventing or dissuading a witness from testifying or producing evidence with immediate threat or use of physical force. She’s pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Making matters worse, TMZ released audio of a leaked call of Karen scolding one of her children, and admitting to threatening to kill one of her children. In the audio, Karen sounds unhinged, and seemingly in the middle of a mental health crisis. It’s a far cry from the devoted and loving mother TLC fans grew to know and love.

“You don’t know what the hell I’m going through and what I’ve been through. You’re only going by what he said,” Karen said during the call, seemingly referring to Deon. “I’m the freaking one that carried your little behind. I’m the one that told the doctors no when they asked me to abort your little ass. Don’t ever do that again, because you make me regret it.” After Karen says she did “regret it,” another child replied, “No wonder why you said you were going to kill me.”Karen doesn’t fully deny the claim, telling the child, “No, no, no, I never said I’m gonna,” Karen said. “I said I’d kill you if you pissed me off,” adding that her son had “disrespected me.”

We don’t know what took place with Karen and Derrico over the years, but it’s obvious from what we did see that Karen put herself on the backburner for many years to center on family. There’s a saying about bearing and raising children: one is good, two is plenty. I couldn’t imagine having 14 and the mental toll that takes spreading oneself so thin, and having no outlet for yourself.

Karen asked for help and didn’t receive it. She expressed feeling overwhelmed and her cries went ignored. This is a woman who is clearly in breakdown. Hopefully, she takes the time she needs to re-center herself so that she’s able to show up fully as a woman, and mother. And moving forward, she learns that she too matters.

Karen and her legal team have alleged this is all a scheme that Deon set up, and that some of their children have been brainwashed by their father, caught in the middle of a bitter divorce and taking sides. They even allege that Deon is behind the alleged threatening emails he claims Karen sent him.

Responding to Karen’s allegations, Deon spoke exclusively with Oxygen.com. "It's absolutely egregious," he said on July 1. "I think it is absolutely absurd and preposterous. I have no ability or no way of hacking her email. I feel [that way] because something died," he continued. "Something that I loved died and that was us as a unit, as a whole, and our family is torn in two. So something has died. What has died was the way we once were, and we'll never be that way again."
