NFL Icons Celebrate Black History Month By Supporting HBCUs And Black Girls In Tech
As sports fans prepare for the 59th Superbowl in New Orleans on Sunday February 9th, four of the NFL’s most recognizable retired franchise players have joined forces to support young Black women in technology. Terrell Owens, Jerome Bettis, Bobby Taylor and Brian Mitchell will host the Players Paradise Super Charity Reception on Wednesday, February 5th to benefit theBlack Collegiate Gaming Association Foundation (BCGAF). Proceeds from the event will support keeping 17 BCGAF gaming and innovation labs open at HBCU member institutions in 11 states across the country.
BCGAF founder Keshia Walker has a long working history with Pro Football Hall of Famer'sTerrell Owens & Jerome Bettis; and former Super Bowl and NFC ChampionsBobby Taylor and Brian Mitchell and believes their current impact as community advocates is just as impactful as the impact they made on the football field. “As the news reports funding cuts for DEI initiatives specifically related to programs supporting young Black students, we are proud to rely on heroes from our community to fund our programs. Their careers on the gridiron made them larger than life but their continued commitment to their community keeps their legacy alive,” Walker says.
BCGAF is the only organization that provides access, scholarships, education, and mentorship to black students and women of color in the gaming industry. Walker and her team made history five years ago when she founded the organization based on the lack of representation of black women in technology, specifically the gaming industry.
“Super Bowl 2025 is one of the most anticipated games for a number of reasons. Our agency has thrown parties and worked with NFL players on their contributions to their community for years. The Players Super Charity reception gives us the opportunity to celebrate the upcoming game while supporting the future of young Black students,” Walker shares.
The Players Super Charity party is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5th at The Metropolitan located at 310 Andrew Higgins Blvd New Orleans, LA 70130.
