The incomparable Howard Hewett, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning artist and songwriter, and one of the most soulful and timeless voices in music, was honored with the Music Icon Award at the 2025 Afro Awards, held at the prestigious Harmony Gold Theatre in Hollywood, California.

Recognized for his unmatched contributions to R&B, soul, and inspirational music, Hewett continues to inspire generations of artists and fans around the world with his signature sound, heartfelt performances, and enduring legacy.

Known as the lead singer of the legendary group Shalamar, Hewett helped define the sound of a generation with timeless hits like “A Night to Remember,” “This Is for the Lover in You,” and “The Second Time Around.” His remarkable solo career also produced unforgettable classics such as “Show Me,” “Say Amen,” and “I’m for Real.”

Today, Howard Hewett continues to perform both with Shalamar and as a celebrated solo artist, captivating audiences around the world with his soulful voice and dynamic stage presence. His music remains a bridge between eras, uniting fans of classic soul with new generations discovering his artistry.

The beloved artist and songwriter recently received an outpouring of love and recognition from peers and fans alike during his birthday celebration on October 1st. Among those who shared heartfelt shout-outs were Snoop Dogg, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Kenny Lattimore, Kandi Burruss, Luenell, Dawnn Lewis, Chanté Moore, and many more. Their tributes reflected the immense respect and admiration for Hewett’s influence, a testament to how deeply his music has touched lives and become part of so many personal and cultural storylines.

During his heartfelt acceptance, Hewett shared,

“I’m so honored to receive this Afro Awards Music Icon Award. I’ve been in this music business for over 40 years, and time has truly flown by. I’m grateful to God for the gift of music, to my family, my fans, and everyone who’s supported me along the way. Music is love, and I’ll keep sharing that love for as long as I can.”

The evening also recognized several other notable honorees, including Luenell, comedian and actress, who received the Diamond Mic Award; Michael Blackson, comedian and actor, who received the Diaspora Humanitarian Award; Natasha Ward, casting director, who received Casting Director of the Year; Faizon Love, actor and comedian, who received the Culture and Comedy Impact Award; and Jarred Vanderbilt, forward for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Afro Awards, founded by Taiwo Oduala, a Nigerian filmmaker, producer, and entrepreneur, celebrates individuals who exemplify excellence and impact across entertainment, business, and community leadership. The theme for the 2025 ceremony, “Excellence Meets Diversity,” beautifully captured the spirit of the night, honoring trailblazers who uplift and unite through their art and influence.
