The music community is reflecting on the legacy of Riccardo Bray, whose recent passing marks the end of an era for fans of funk and soul. While not an original member of Zapp, Bray became a cornerstone of the band’s live performances for many years, earning respect as a staple of their touring lineup and as a vital contributor to the group’s evolving sound.

Zapp, founded in Dayton, Ohio, by the Troutman brothers in the late 1970s, made an indelible mark on the music world with their innovative use of the talk box and infectious grooves. As the band’s popularity grew through the 1980s and into the 1990s, Bray’s guitar work became an essential part of their stage presence, helping to energize audiences and keep the Zapp sound fresh and dynamic.

Beyond his role on tour, Riccardo Bray’s musicianship left a lasting imprint on the band’s recordings and related projects during the late 1980s and early 1990s. His guitar skills can be heard not only with Zapp and Roger Troutman but also on projects with Shirley Murdock, Micowave, and Roger Troutman Jr. (Lynch). Bray’s versatility and creativity in the studio and on stage made him a sought-after collaborator, contributing to the success of numerous artists within the Troutman musical family.

Even as Zapp’s commercial momentum shifted over the years, Bray’s presence remained constant, performing alongside Lester Troutman, Terry Troutman, Dale Degroat and other key members including his cousin Bigg Robb. His dedication to the music and to the fans helped sustain the band’s reputation for electrifying live shows and authentic funk.

Riccardo Bray may not have been there at the very beginning, but his influence and artistry became an integral part of Zapp’s story. His legacy will live on through the music he helped create and the countless performances that brought joy to audiences around the world.
