A star-studded reunion took place during NBA All-Star Week at the Maybourne Beverly Hills, as director Gina Prince-Bythewood and actress Sanaa Lathan came together to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the classic film, Love & Basketball. The event, hosted by the HBCU First LOOK Film Festival (HBCUFLF), served as a powerful tribute to the film’s legacy and a springboard for the next generation of creators.

A Legacy of Representation

The celebration highlighted how Prince-Bythewood’s work redefined the portrayal of women in both cinema and competitive sports. Moderated by CNN’s Laura Coates, the panel discussion featured an extraordinary lineup of pioneers, including:

  • Sanaa Lathan: Lead actress of Love & Basketball.
  • Candace Parker & Cheryl Miller: WNBA legends and icons of the game.
  • Cari Champion & Jayne Kennedy: Trailblazing broadcasters who broke barriers in sports journalism.

The conversation focused on the film's enduring cultural weight and its role in championing the stories of female athletes. During the talk, Cari Champion took a moment to honor Jayne Kennedy for her foundational role in the industry and acknowledged journalist Jemele Hill, who was in attendance, for her continued advocacy in sports media.

"We are at a crucial intersection where storytelling meets advocacy, forging new pathways for future generations."
