Q: Your new single “Amen” carries such a powerful message of faith, hope, and perseverance. What inspired you to create this song?
Ann Nesby: “Amen” was inspired by the reality that everyone faces challenges in life. There are moments when circumstances can make you feel like giving up, but that is exactly when you have to lean into your faith. This song is a reminder that God is always with us, even in our darkest moments. No matter what you are facing, don’t quit, don’t lose hope, and never stop believing.
Q: The message of the song says, “Don’t give up... You’ve got to say Amen.” What do you hope listeners feel when they hear it?
Ann Nesby: I hope people feel encouraged and reminded that they are not alone. Sometimes all you need to do is lift your hands, trust God, and simply say, “Amen.” It is a declaration of faith that God is going to bring you through whatever you are facing.
Q: Before becoming one of gospel and R&B’s most respected voices, you had early beginnings at the James Cleveland Workshop of America. What did that experience mean to your journey?
Ann Nesby: The James Cleveland Workshop of America was an incredible foundation for me. Being surrounded by gospel giants like James Cleveland, Albertina Walker, and Donald Lawrence helped shape who I became as an artist. Those experiences taught me the importance of ministry, storytelling, and using my voice to inspire others.
Q: You became internationally recognized as the lead vocalist of the Grammy Award-winning Sounds of Blackness. How did that chapter shape your career?
Ann Nesby: Sounds of Blackness was a blessing and a major part of my musical journey. We were able to share messages of faith, culture, and inspiration with people around the world. That experience gave me a foundation that continues to influence my music today.
Q: You are a six-time Grammy Award-nominated solo artist. What does
Ann Nesby: I am grateful and humbled. Awards are wonderful, but the greatest reward is knowing that the music has touched people’s lives. Every nomination, every award, and every opportunity to share my voice has been a blessing.
Q: You are also a two-time Grammy Award winner. How does it feel to see your work recognized at that level?
Ann Nesby: Winning Grammys is an incredible honor because it represents recognition from the music community. But I have always believed the greatest accomplishment is touching someone’s heart through music and creating something that inspires people.
Q: Your solo career includes the unforgettable song “Put It on Paper,” your duet with legendary vocalist Reverend Al Green, along with “I Apologize.” What did those moments mean to you?
Ann Nesby: Working with artists like Reverend Al Green was an incredible honor. Those experiences allowed me to grow creatively and share music with people who have inspired generations. I’m grateful for every collaboration and every door God has opened throughout my career.
Q: You have collaborated with legends including Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, and Sting. What have those collaborations taught you?
Ann Nesby: Every collaboration has been a blessing and a learning experience. Working with incredible artists and producers reminds you that music is powerful because it connects people. I have always approached every opportunity with gratitude and a desire to give my best.
Q: You also made your mark as an actress, including your role in the film “The Fighting Temptations.” What was that experience like?
Ann Nesby: “The Fighting Temptations” was a special experience because it brought together music, acting, and storytelling. Being able to share the screen and perform alongside incredible talent, including Gospel legend Shirley Caesar, was truly memorable. It remains a meaningful moment in my career.
Q: You have expanded your creativity beyond music through acting and documentary filmmaking, including “CIRILO, A Legacy Untold.” Why is storytelling important to you?
Ann Nesby: Storytelling allows us to preserve history, inspire others, and share messages that matter. Whether I’m singing, acting, or producing a documentary, my goal is always to connect with people and leave something meaningful behind.
Q: After decades in the entertainment industry, what continues to inspire you?
Ann Nesby: My faith inspires me. The people who listen to my music inspire me. Knowing that a song can encourage someone, bring them joy, or help them through a difficult time keeps me going. As long as I have a voice, I want to use it to uplift others.
Q: What message do you want people to remember after hearing “Amen”?
Ann Nesby: Never give up. Keep believing. Keep moving forward. God is faithful, and even when life gets difficult, there is always hope. Sometimes you just have to lift your voice and say, “Amen.”
